IUI Treatment in Mumbai
Understand intrauterine insemination, cycle timing and why an individual assessment comes before choosing treatment.
What is IUI?
Intrauterine insemination places a prepared sperm sample into the uterus around ovulation. Fertilisation still needs to occur inside the body, usually in a fallopian tube. IUI differs from IVF, where eggs are collected and fertilisation happens in a laboratory. IUI does not involve egg retrieval.
Who may benefit?
Suitability depends on ovulation, the fallopian tubes, the sperm sample and other individual factors. IUI may be discussed for selected fertility situations following assessment. It is not appropriate for every cause of infertility. Ask how the findings support the recommendation and how IUI compares with other options in your circumstances.
Before the cycle
Your doctor reviews relevant investigations and previous treatment. Ask whether ovulation will be tracked in a natural cycle or whether medicines are proposed. If a partner provides the sample, discuss the collection arrangements and timing in advance. Do not start fertility medicines or follow a fixed medicine schedule found online without a prescription.
How IUI works
- Plan: review results, discuss consent and agree the approach.
- Track ovulation: monitoring or testing helps identify timing. Some protocols use medicines.
- Prepare sperm: the laboratory prepares the sample.
- Insemination: a speculum is used and a thin catheter passes the sample into the uterus.
- Follow-up: follow the agreed instructions and take a pregnancy test on the recommended date.
What to expect at the appointment
Insemination is usually brief, although the full visit includes preparation. Some people experience discomfort or cramps. Ask what to expect, whether someone should accompany you and whether restrictions apply afterwards. Tell the clinician about anxiety around examinations or previous difficult procedures so your concerns can be discussed before treatment.
Risks and limitations
IUI does not guarantee fertilisation or pregnancy. Stimulation medicines can increase the risk of multiple pregnancy and ovarian hyperstimulation. Monitoring may lead to changing or cancelling a cycle when proceeding is inappropriate. Your clinician should explain the risks relevant to your protocol, the symptoms that need attention and how to reach the team.
Reviewing progress
Before treatment, agree when the plan will be reviewed. The number of attempts should reflect age, investigation results, response and preferences. A review can consider continuing, investigating further or discussing IVF. An unsuccessful attempt does not by itself explain why pregnancy has not occurred, so bring your questions to the review rather than making assumptions.
IUI and IVF: an informed discussion
Ask about the reason for recommending IUI, differences in procedures and the practical commitment each option involves. Request an estimate that specifies monitoring, sample preparation, medicines and follow-up. If donor sperm is relevant, discuss the clinic arrangements and applicable legal requirements directly with the treating team. This website does not state a fixed package or universal treatment sequence.
Organising a treatment cycle
Clarify which appointments depend on ovulation timing and how much notice you may receive. Ask what happens if a sample cannot be provided as planned or an appointment needs to change. Having a clear contact route and understanding the follow-up plan can make the experience easier to organise alongside daily responsibilities.
Prepare for a useful consultation
Bring earlier blood tests, ultrasound reports, semen analysis results and records of previous fertility treatment. A list of current medicines, supplements, allergies and relevant operations helps build a complete picture. Ask which previous reports remain useful before repeating investigations.
Discuss work, travel, emotional support and costs. Request an itemised estimate and ask what may change during treatment. Understand the reason for each recommendation, possible alternatives and who to contact between appointments. You can ask for clarification before giving consent.

Frequently asked questions
Do all IUI cycles use medicines?
No. The plan may track natural ovulation or use prescribed medicines, depending on the assessment.
When can I take a pregnancy test?
Use the date advised by your clinic. Testing too early can give a misleading result.
Does unsuccessful IUI mean IVF is necessary?
Not automatically. Review the findings and treatment history with your doctor before deciding the next step.
