ICSI Treatment in Mumbai
Understand the laboratory fertilisation technique used within IVF and the reasons it may be discussed for your treatment.
What does ICSI mean?
Intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI, is a technique in which an embryologist injects a single sperm into a mature egg. It is carried out during IVF. Ovarian stimulation, egg collection and later embryo-transfer decisions remain part of the wider IVF journey. The injection is a laboratory procedure performed on the egg.
How does it differ from conventional IVF?
With conventional IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together for fertilisation. ICSI assists sperm entry through a laboratory injection. This difference concerns the fertilisation stage and does not replace the rest of the cycle. Helping sperm enter an egg does not guarantee fertilisation, embryo development, implantation or a baby.
When may it be considered?
ICSI may be discussed for significant problems with sperm number, movement or shape, when surgically retrieved sperm is used, or after some previous fertilisation difficulties. The full assessment matters. It should not be assumed to improve results for everyone simply because it is an additional procedure. Ask for the reason it is proposed in your case.
How treatment is organised
- Assessment: review medical history, relevant semen analysis and earlier treatment.
- IVF preparation: plan stimulation, monitoring and egg retrieval.
- Sample arrangements: agree how sperm will be available and whether another specialist procedure is needed.
- Laboratory injection: an embryologist performs ICSI on suitable mature eggs.
- Embryo review: the team assesses fertilisation and development.
- Next stage: transfer or freezing is considered according to clinical and laboratory findings.
Understanding the laboratory updates
Egg retrieval, egg maturity, fertilisation and embryo development are different milestones. The number of eggs collected does not equal the number of embryos available for transfer. Ask when updates will arrive and who can explain them. You can request a plain-language explanation of an embryology report and clarify which decision is due next.
Risks and limitations
ICSI carries the risks of the underlying IVF cycle and a possibility of egg damage during handling or injection. Some eggs may not fertilise. Particular inherited causes of male infertility may warrant specialist discussion or genetic counselling. Your clinician can explain which concerns apply to the findings and whether further assessment would change management.
Planning sperm availability
Discuss any previous difficulty providing a sample before egg retrieval is scheduled. If surgical retrieval is contemplated, ask which specialist is involved, what consent is needed and what happens if no sperm is available. Ask whether a backup arrangement is relevant. These practical details require direct confirmation from your treating team.
Making an informed choice
Request an explanation of the anticipated benefit, alternatives and additional laboratory costs. Bring earlier embryology reports when available. An unsuccessful cycle deserves individual review; changing fertilisation method is not a universal solution. Discuss how the recommendation fits your broader treatment goals, rather than judging a cycle only by one laboratory result.
Before giving consent
Ask which parts of the plan have been decided and which depend on findings on the day. Clarify how the clinic will communicate a proposed change. You may want to write down questions about sample collection, handling, storage, transfer and follow-up. Understanding these arrangements helps you participate in decisions without needing to master laboratory terminology.
Prepare for a useful consultation
Bring earlier blood tests, ultrasound reports, semen analysis results and records of previous fertility treatment. A list of current medicines, supplements, allergies and relevant operations helps build a complete picture. Ask which previous reports remain useful before repeating investigations.
Discuss work, travel, emotional support and costs. Request an itemised estimate and ask what may change during treatment. Understand the reason for each recommendation, possible alternatives and who to contact between appointments. You can ask for clarification before giving consent.

Frequently asked questions
Does ICSI guarantee fertilisation?
No. Some eggs may not fertilise even after injection, and further development is also uncertain.
Is ICSI separate from IVF?
ICSI is a method of fertilisation used within an IVF cycle.
Should everyone having IVF use ICSI?
No. Discuss the indication, expected benefit, risks and additional cost for your individual situation.
